I often get asked if hypnotherapy with children is safe, and yes it is, there are a couple of points I would like to add however, but for the most part it is common sense.
Children work particularly well with hypnosis because quite simply they have excellent imaginations. Hypnotherapy by a good hypnotherapist will require the subject to be able to use imagination to some degree, that can be stumbling block for some, but not very often for children, that's the easy bit for them.
It goes without saying supervision by a parent or guardian is paramount. I would never work with child alone, and I would never work with ANYONE under the age of 18 without parents consent and them being present if it were a "one to one" session. If anyone asks to work with a child or young adult alone....refuse.
How young can they be? Well really the limit is they must be able to understand you, so really 5 or 6. Hypnotherapy is only story telling, so if they can understand a story, then a good hypnotherapist can include the help within the story without them even knowing. They should however inform the parents of what they are attempting, and consult with them if they agree this is suitable. Using animals instead of humans in the story, and placing an animal in the same situation as the child (bringing in the problem) is a very good approach. Then the idea would be is to get the child to help the animal. Completely turning around a fearful situation into a one where they are the hero and in control. A good hypnotherapist would be able to do something like this, but there are other ways, always ask the therapist what they intend to do. IF you don't agree with it, then do not go ahead with it.
Reality Check Just keep an eye on your child or speak to them to ensure they know that the story they have been told under hypnosis is a story. The same as watching a film on TV it can be fantasy, and must not be acted out. I have not come across this problem, but it is something just worth keeping an eye on.

Thanks Lee
Hypnosis works well to children because it is less fingerprints together to strengthen faith. Children are more susceptible to hypnosis. Children's easily learn this therapy as they always have the drive to discover and they hunger for new experiences.

I have used this on and off for a long time and it certainly does the business, but it's important to understand that the whole hypnosis thing only works if you allow yourself to relax and go with it, this therapy works great with childrens too.

This is a nice article resource about hypnotherapy for children. A great help for parents who wanted to help their children get rid of unhealthy habits. They simply have to search a professional hypnotherapist who can also establish a great rapport with their children.

I do not agree about the unhealthy habits at all. Hypnotherapy can and should only be used to help someone who wants help. It should never be used by a parent who wants to try and "rid a child of an unhealthy habit"
That is quite honestly......rubbish.
Really interesting post. I have yet to work with children but hope to develop that side side of my practice soon.
I would definitely agree with regard to not treating under age children without supervision. I make it a rule that all children must have signed written consent from parent or legal guardian for the specific goals using hypnosis, for example; fear of spiders, bed wetting, nightmares, etc.
I have never done this - are there any good courses you recommend please ?
Are there any courses or workshops about this please ?
A good clear article on this subject, thanks! As you say, its really about story-telling, and this emphasises the importance of developing, not stunting, a child's imagination. Some so-called experts advocate that children should only be allowed to read "realistic" books based on their own limited experience, however given the choice kids still go for books like Harry Potter that enlarge their imaginations. Computer games are often condemned for promoting physical inactivity, which is a problem, however on the positive side they also enlarge the imagination and involve the child interactively instead of passively like television.
Thanks for share articles about hypnotherapy

My business partner is a paediatric hypnotherapist. Working with children is a large part of his client load.
He finds working with children immensely rewarding. Using the child's hero as a very useful technique to help children to change their behaviours.
He runs a master class in paediatric hypnotherapy. It's very difficult for a hypnotherapist to learn how to work with children.
Kind regards
Paul Howard
